As part of our coastal discussion this Fall, we’re getting out of the Meeting House and traveling to the beach — with a private tour of Castle Island and Fort Independence by the Castle Island Association. A defensive point since 1643, the present structure is the eighth fort on Castle Island! We’ll learn how the area’s transformation from a 17th century fortification to the modern M Street and Carson Beaches has made this section of coastline an essential part of summer in in the city. While learning how the area has been challenged by Boston’s urban growth, we’ll explore Castle Island in the last of the season’s warmth.
